Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine uses a radiopharmaceutical, sometimes called a tracer, to reveal biological activity. The tracer and type of examination are chosen for the clinical question. Dr Farhana is Head of Nuclear Medicine at Hospital Picaso, where her imaging work is interpreted in the context of the wider care team.

Molecular Imaging

Images can show aspects of how organs or tissues are functioning, adding information to what can be seen from their structure alone.

PET/CT

PET provides tracer-based information while CT adds anatomical detail. Together, they can help answer selected questions about disease and treatment response.

Why the Tracer Matters: Different tracers highlight different processes. The intended question, available evidence and individual circumstances shape the examination that is considered.

02 · Treatment

Theranostics Treatment

Theranostics combines molecular imaging with targeted radiopharmaceutical treatment. Imaging is used to identify specific biological targets within the disease and can help determine whether a patient may be suitable for a corresponding targeted therapy.

Examples include PSMA-targeted therapy for prostate cancer and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) for selected neuroendocrine tumours.

Treatment decisions are made by the multidisciplinary treating team, taking into account the imaging findings, diagnosis, previous treatments, overall health and the expected benefits and risks of therapy.

What Guides a Decision?

  • Clinical FitDiagnosis, imaging findings, earlier care and other health information are reviewed together.
  • Benefits and LimitationsA multidisciplinary team considers likely benefits, possible risks and other available options.
  • Current AvailabilityAccess to a specific therapy and individual suitability must be confirmed through the treating service.

These general concepts do not confirm a particular treatment is offered or suitable for an individual.
